Bespoke Craft Room Remodel in Alpine, Utah
Use Your Imagination: How a Master Suite Became the Perfect Craft Room
The best home remodels aren’t always about adding what’s expected. Sometimes they’re about recognizing what you actually want — and having the creativity to build it.
That’s the spirit behind this project in Alpine, Utah. The homeowner had a master bathroom and closet that were no longer serving their original purpose. A new master suite was being added as part of the larger renovation. So the question became: what does this space want to be now?
Her answer: a craft room. Specifically, a space built around her love of Lego — and designed so that friends and family could join in, sit all the way around a work island, and share in the creative process.
Rethinking the Space
The existing master bathroom and closet had to be largely dismantled. That meant removing significant plumbing, relocating walls, and changing the exterior windows to bring in the right kind of light. The plumbing removal in particular was a major undertaking — not a gut-and-go situation, but a careful reworking of a space that had been designed for a completely different function.
Whatever could be salvaged was donated to Habitat for Humanity. The rest made way for something entirely new.
“Use your imagination. Be creative. What is it that you want to do, that you may not have thought about doing in this space?”
Built for the Way She Creates
The functional centerpiece of the room is the island — designed specifically so that multiple people can sit all the way around it and work together. For a Lego enthusiast who builds with friends and family, that kind of seating arrangement changes everything.
Surrounding the island are pantry-style cabinets for storage, open display shelving to showcase finished builds, and two dedicated desk positions — one for sewing, one for computer work. The room is genuinely multi-functional, but every feature was designed with the primary purpose in mind.
Light That Works
Crafters need great light, and this room delivers it. The electrician placed fixtures with real intention — so that the space is bright and even, even late at night. Under-cabinet lighting at the desk areas and integrated lighting in the display shelving add layers that make the room both functional and beautiful.
The Finish
The designer and client had a strong creative partnership throughout this project. The client gave the designer significant latitude, and the designer consistently delivered concepts the client loved. In this room, the focus was on function first — countertops that could handle real use, seating that invited people in, storage that stayed out of the way. The aesthetic followed from those priorities.
The Result
She loves it. It functions exactly the way she imagined, and the room gets used the way it was designed to be used — which is the real measure of a successful remodel.
If you have a room in your home that isn’t working the way it should, the answer might not be what you’d expect. Sometimes the best version of a space is something no one has tried before. We’d love to help you figure out what yours could be.
